Wedding Songs for Church Wedding CeremoniesDon’t get stuck trying to find wedding songs for your church wedding ceremony.

It can be tricky enough to find the perfect song for your wedding, but finding one also appropriate for a church can be extra difficult. But not if you follow these guidelines.

Just to be clear, in this article, by “song”, we mean a piece of vocal music rather than the common definition (“any piece of music”).

What makes good wedding songs for church ceremonies?

Here are some things to consider when selecting wedding songs for church ceremonies.

Most importantly: Is the song appropriate for church use? For more on this, see the article “What Everyone Ought To Know About Choosing Church Wedding Music”.

A basic test to see if your song is appropriate for a church:

Is the focus of the song on God or Christ’s love for us?

If your song doesn’t meet this test, then you might have some extra work ahead of you (depending on your church’s policies). If it passes this next less-rigid test, you have a good chance of being able to use your song:

Does the song at least mention God and ideally Christ?

Some example church wedding songs

We know how hard it can be to find a good wedding song, especially Christian wedding music. Here are just a few suggestions for you as a starting point for your search. The list includes new and old, familiar and unfamiliar:

  • Robert J. Powell “Walk in Love (Wedding Song)”
  • Johann Sebastian Bach “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”
  • Dietrich Buxtehude “Lord, Who at Cana’s Wedding Feast”

These guidelines can help you with planning and choosing not just vocal pieces, but also your wedding prelude, processional and other pieces for your Christian church wedding.

What you can do

As you plan your church wedding ceremony, keep this in mind by asking yourself whether the songs you’re considering are truly appropriate for a church ceremony.

It’s OK to admit to yourself that you’re thinking about a song because “you like it”. Just be sure to take that next step and consider whether it fits in with the point of a church ceremony.
